About

Our Story

Calvin and Crystal Griffiths, originally from South Africa, have chosen the beautiful Alentejo region of Portugal to call home. Calvin’s lifelong dream has been to establish a sustainable, organic, and eco-friendly farm, run in harmony with nature and entirely off the grid. With years of research, practical experience, and a deep commitment to environmental stewardship, Calvin and Crystal founded G-Agri, a family-owned and operated farm.

Calvin’s passion for sustainable farming is grounded in his extensive knowledge and expertise. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Sciences and a Bachelor of Science Honours in Wildlife Management from the University of Pretoria. With over seven years of experience in the agricultural and food processing industries as a biosecurity expert and technical advisor, Calvin’s approach is grounded in science-backed techniques that ensure optimal production and the highest quality of farm products. His vision for G-Agri is to create a self-sustaining farm that operates in an eco-friendly manner, contributing to environmental preservation while producing exceptional products.

Crystal, with her expertise in construction management and water management, has played an integral role in the farm’s development. Her experience in the water industry has allowed G-Agri to incorporate innovative water-saving techniques and sustainable water management systems, critical in the dry Alentejo region.

The Alentejo region was chosen for its rich agricultural heritage, favorable climate, and abundant natural resources, making it an ideal location for G-Agri’s mission. Known for its vast open landscapes, rolling hills, and traditional farming culture, Alentejo offers fertile soils, making it the perfect place to cultivate crops and raise livestock sustainably. Additionally, the region’s peaceful and rural setting aligns perfectly with Calvin’s vision of a farm that is both eco-conscious and community-focused.

G-Agri is not just a business; it’s a commitment to the local community. Calvin and Crystal believe in the importance of supporting other local farmers and the community around them. Through collaborations and initiatives, G-Agri aims to foster local growth, share knowledge, and create an inclusive and thriving agricultural ecosystem.

Sustainability Practices

At G-Agri, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. Our farm is designed to operate off the grid, utilizing renewable energy sources, innovative water-saving techniques, and environmentally friendly farming practices. We prioritize the health of our soil, water, and animals through:

  • Organic Farming: We use natural fertilizers, organic feed, and sustainable methods that enhance soil fertility, improve crop yield, and promote biodiversity without harming the environment.
  • Water Management: Thanks to Crystal’s experience in the water industry, we employ cutting-edge water-saving technologies, such as drip irrigation and rainwater harvesting, ensuring that we minimize water waste in the dry Alentejo region.
  • Animal Welfare: Our livestock are raised in a free-range, organic environment, ensuring the highest standards of care and welfare, while maintaining the integrity of our natural surroundings.
  • Circular Farming: We use a circular farming model, where animal waste is composted and used as natural fertilizer, creating a closed-loop system that reduces waste and enriches our land.

We are committed to constantly evolving our sustainable practices and finding new ways to reduce our environmental footprint while producing high-quality products.
